Sometimes you feel unseen, unheard, a picture on the wall that is slightly tilted that others walk by straighten and keep going. No one sees the beauty that is within you, often trying to quiet everything about you that makes you great. The color of your skin, the texture of your hair, the way you stand firm in your beliefs although beautiful to some is criticized by others. You try to stand in your uniqueness, embracing your culture but there is so much around you that tells you to quiet down, to stay under the radar so that you can maintain the appearance of being professional.
The struggle between your real self and the self that society wants to see creates anxiety in our life. Wanting to do more and be more but not having the opportunity that other women may have challenges your sense of worth. Be quieter, style your hair this way, talk like this and you’ll do well, embrace your true self and you’ll fail. You start to question if the real you is good enough. You remember the negativity that you got from others throughout your life because everything about you was different from them. You watched television and looked through magazines struggling to see people that were successful and looked like you. You began to feel like you were up against the world and every time you wanted to step out to make a better life for yourself you were stopped by those society engrained beliefs about yourself. Although deep inside you know you are beautiful, you know that you are capable of great things you can’t get past the negative thoughts that continue to increase about minority women.
“You start to question if the real you is good enough.”
Every time your greatness wants to shine through your heart races and an onslaught of negativity feels your head. You worry about how you will be perceived by others, if you will be accepted, if they will see your worth or will your outside continue to interfere with the goals that you have for yourself. The crazy thing is, right now there are a lot of minority women doing big things, it feels you with this false sense of power. You get revved up about all that you can achieve, screaming that you can do or be anything you want but you’re slapped back down by your own reality. You’re reminded of all the times you were called ugly or stupid. The way you were passed around within the family because your parents were too busy to show you the affection that you needed making you question if anybody will ever want you.
Why do You Have These Feelings?
Everything that you are feeling is very common, you’re not the only one struggling with this. See you have always been treated differently whether you want to acknowledge it or not. People always questioned having interactions with you due to their own belief set. You watched inequality play out on television on a variety of shows, people being judged based on false beliefs. And even when you thought you just weren’t experiencing that, it was always present in the back of your head, wondering if your appearance would get you into trouble some day.
“You have always been treated differently whether you want to acknowledge it or not.”
You were told to straighten your hair, stay out of the sun, and flip the way that you talk around certain people just to try to avoid any conflict. But what that was telling you is that you’re not good enough just as you are. It told you that you have to change and make accommodations for others in order to be acceptable. You thought it wasn’t affecting you but it was, it was making you second guess yourself, it created insecurities and from that you developed anxiety.
What to Expect In Therapy
I know the idea of therapy is something that people struggle with especially minorities. It’s seen as allowing others into your personal business or possibly letting the secrets of the household be known. You will probably be looked at strangely and receive push back from others for wanting to reach out and get assistance from a stranger. But the reality is, it’s hard to fight against societal norms on your own. It’s hard to believe in your ability to be great when there are so many examples of people trying to be great being shut down. Having outside support that can look at your situation with a unique set of lenses can make all the difference in how you are able to push forward in your life
So, how is therapy with me going to help you? I’m not a person that uses big fancy techniques but someone that has worked with people with anxiety going on 10 years now. I understand how to listen to a person’s story and guide them in a way that is fitting for them. I will help you to see the magic within you and build up your confidence to move forward in your life. I will challenge the negative thoughts about yourself and your abilities that have been engrained in your head since you were little. I will help you to get to a point where you are able to speak your mind freely without worrying about what others have to say.
